Why I Don’t overly rely on the Algorithm When Supporting Baby Sleep

Sleep Needs Soul Too

In a world hyper focused on automation and optimisation, it’s tempting to think that an algorithm can solve baby sleep. But as The Sleep Goddess, I believe supporting families through these tender years also needs the human touch.

This week, while reading his biography, I came across Elon Musk’s now famous “algorithm” a five step formula designed to streamline production at Tesla. While it’s brilliant for engineering, it reminded me why I take a very different approach to baby sleep.

Here’s why I don’t rely only on algorithms when creating my plans:

  1. Babies aren’t machines. They’re beautifully different and they are wired for connection. An algorithm can’t account for a baby’s need for extra cuddles after a tough night or the subtle shifts in sleep during a developmental leap.

  2. What looks unnecessary might be essential. Night feeds, contact naps, and cuddles might not be “efficient”, but they are often exactly what builds secure attachment and emotional safety.

  3. Sleep routines are more than systems. If you optimise bedtime too rigidly, you risk losing the rituals that help a baby feel held, known, and settled.

  4. Biology can’t be rushed. Brain development unfolds at its own pace. Babies are born to wake and need comfort, ESPECIALLY in the first year.

  5. Intuition matters more than data. A mother’s instinct is OH SO powerful. No AI can replace the wisdom that lives in your gut when you know what your baby needs in the moment.

That’s why I use a holistic, human led approach blending gentle sleep science with years of real life experience, including the feeding, activity, and sleep logs I’ve tracked from raising my own three children 👶🙋🏼‍♀️🤷‍♂️

Real life update:

This week, our two year-old climbed out of his cot for the first time at naptime. I was heartbroken the end of an era! If you’re navigating this too, here are a few gentle suggestions:

  • Stay grounded. Your calm is their calm. Toddlers feed off your energy.

  • Try a floor bed. A safe, low sleep space supports their growing independence while still honouring boundaries.

  • Keep the nap space sleep friendly. Dim the lights, eliminate distractions, and maintain the same rhythm as before. Remember my acronym, KISS (keep it simple stupid) when it comes to their bedroom.

  • Hold boundaries with warmth. A predictable nap routine helps toddlers feel safe.

  • Know this is normal. It’s a sign of growth. Not a sign of failure. Be flexible, but consistent.

Our kittens are turning one soon!
