Sleep Essentials Uncovered and Unconditional Parenting
Embrace What Matters ⭐️
Happy Hump Day erryone 🐪
Before I head to my favourite playgroup with our youngest. I am sitting down to write this for you. I want to link sleep with a fantastic book I am currently reading.
Remember that it can be tempting to be swayed by new-age solutions that promise instant results.
But there’s no such thing.
I want to advocate a return to the simple, profound practices that strengthen deep connections and secure attachments. The bread and butter of Social Work. And of Holistic Sleep Coaching.
Currently inspired by a book I am reading, "Unconditional Parenting" by Alfie Kohn. In it, I'm finding valuable insights that resonate deeply with my own beliefs on developing healthy sleep habits.
My Insights from Unconditional Parenting:
As The Sleep Goddess, a firm believer in holding your babies close, I love embracing the heartfelt interactions that build security and independence in children.
Kohn's insights reveal how children who are assured of their parents' love feel safer and less defensive, which not only encourages assertiveness and independence but can also promote better sleep due to a sense of security.
Kohn stresses the importance of our actions in teaching children empathy and care. Which I love. For example, he writes about how when we as parents show concern for others, it instills powerful moral lessons to our children that influence all areas of their life, including their nighttime routines.
An example in our own family is that when our 5 year old began to understand that mummy also gets tired at night, rather than asking for an extra story, she settles down more quickly for bed.
She is learning about empathy and respect for my needs as well as her own—a valuable lesson in consideration!
Parenting with Love and Reason:
One of the most striking themes in Kohn's work is the importance of honesty and guiding our children through love and reason rather than through using authority.
I feel that this blend of heart and head is particularly relevant to establishing your family’s bedtime routine. Because when children understand through gentle, rational explanations and honesty about why certain things are important, they respond with greater acceptance. Explain the WHY behind sleep to them and talk through your bedtime routine together. You’ll be surprised how much this can help.
Simple Steps to Better Sleep:
While gadgets like white noise machines, blackout blinds, and sleep sacks are popular. You know me by now. I do not promote or advocate them, mainly because they will never replace the profound impact of direct, loving interaction.
Here’s how you can keep it simple:
Connect Before Bedtime
Spend quality time with your children in the hour before they go to bed. This can include discussing their day, reading a book together, or some light-hearted rough and tumble play (Silly Buggers).
Eat Dinner Together
Enjoy dinner as a family. This time not only gives everyone an opportunity to connect but also helps transition into the bedtime routine smoothly.
A Comforting Bedtime Routine
Create a bedtime routine that involves cuddles, stories, and kisses. These comforting actions help to create an environment that lead to easier and more zzzz for your children. (And you)
The Bottom Line
Before reaching for the latest product that promises to solve all sleep issues, consider investing time in building strong, loving relationships with your children.
This approach costs little but the returns—children who feel secure, valued, and understood—are HUGE.
this is Alfie Kohns book, I highly recommend it:
I say, let us not overcomplicate what comes naturally to us.. connection, love, and care.
Sometimes, the traditional ways are not just good; they are the best.
