Recognising Signs of Attachment

Understanding and Solutions

In today’s newsletter, I am exploring the intricate world of mum-child attachment. When I worked as a front line social worker, I assessed attachment on a daily basis.

Attachment is the foundation where a child's emotional, social, and cognitive development is built.

Recognising signs of attachment challenges can be so important in offering the necessary support and intervention to develop healthy bonds.

Here are some key signs to watch out for:

Eye Contact

Eye contact can serve as a window into the quality of attachment between mother and child.

Physical Contact

Physical closeness is needed for nurturing secure attachment. resistance to contact is not a good sign.

Emotional Withdrawal

Emotional availability helps secure attachment and therefore, the withdrawal of emotions may manifest if there is an insecure attachment.

Inconsistency in Caregiving

Consistency in caregiving is important and it has implications for attachment development.

Difficulty Separating

Some separation anxiety is to be expected! But if it’s severe, you need to question it and its connection to attachment security.

Limited Emotional Expression

Secure attachment promotes healthy emotional expression. Its absence may pose challenges.

If you've noticed signs of attachment difficulties, there are solutions and strategies to strengthen the bond between mum and baby.

The earlier the better, though. Here’s how..

• Seek Professional Support: I do! You can too. Connect with a qualified healthcare professional or mental health provider for assessment and guidance. I can help, DM me.

• Responsive Caregiving: Discover the power of responsive caregiving in nurturing secure attachment and promoting healthy child development. Follow Lyndsey Hookway on Instagram. She is brilliant and gives me so much insight surrounding responsive parenting.

• Educate Yourself: when you equip yourself with knowledge about attachment theory and effective parenting practices, you can better support your child's emotional needs.

By identifying signs of attachment challenges and taking proactive steps to address them, you can lay the groundwork for a lifetime of emotional resilience and connection.
