Parenting from survival mode? You’re not alone
The silent state no one talks about: functional freeze
Hi love,
Have you ever found yourself going through the motions? Making lunches, folding laundry, doing the school run, but inside, you feel numb?
It’s functional freeze!
Your nervous system is trying to protect you. When “fight or flight” doesn’t feel possible, our bodies sometimes shut down instead, creating the strange contradiction of functioning outwardly while freezing inwardly.
What it looks like in everyday parenting?
Flat caregiving: you’re keeping everyone alive, but without any type of joy or connection.
Social withdrawal: bedtime snuggles, shared meals, even playtime feel like too much for you.
Emotional paralysis: the laundry piles up, the meals get frozen, and you feel stuck between perfectionism and overwhelm.
Rigid routines: a small disruption, a late nap, a school closure.. feels huge.
Loss of joy: you dread the day before it even begins, even if you’ve slept.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone. Many parents live in this state without realising it!
Why it happens
Parenting today is relentless.
We juggle emotional labor, physical presence, financial pressure, and social expectations, often without enough support. For many, the nervous system eventually screams: “I can’t keep up.”
Functional freeze is not a diagnosis, let’s rather refer to it as a “signal”. Left unaddressed, it can strain your mental health, your marriage, and your bond with your children.
How to begin thawing
The good news: you can thaw. Gently. Slowly. With compassion.
A few starting places:
🫶 Self-compassion: remind yourself this is your body protecting you, not a flaw.
🌿 Reconnect with your body: notice your breath, your feet on the ground, stretch.
🕊 Limit multitasking: do one small task mindfully, without your phone.
🌀 remove the rigidity from your life: flexible routines create safety without pressure.
🌞 Fresh air + grounding foods: regulate your body with light, movement, and nourishment.
💜 Tiny connections: sit with your child for 5 minutes with no agenda.
Even the smallest step toward presence ripples outward into deeper connection with yourself and your family.
A gentle reminder from me 🫶🏻💓
This is exactly why I preach flexible rhythms, not too rigid routines. Because parents and babies both need flow. When routines bend, they hold us. Instead of breaking us!
If you’ve been feeling frozen, love, you don’t have to stay that way!

I was so surprised that these were my stats from my PT assessment today? PT said carrying babies makes you stronger than any work out. Hmmm 🤔
