Lovebombing
Discover my Secrets
In 2020, the Covid pandemic changed many aspects of our lives, including how we care for our children. With the increased stress and disruptions caused by the pandemic, ensuring our children get quality sleep actually became more challenging. Factors such as more screen time, unhealthy eating habits, and balancing work-from-home duties with childcare responsibilities made it difficult for many families to maintain healthy sleep routines for their kids. Like many parents, you might have found traditional sleep strategies less effective during these times. This is when I discovered an invaluable parenting lesson: lovebombing can significantly improve a child's sleep! I had two children at the time, and when their sleep was suffering, I resorted to love bombing! (as well as tackling the screen time and healthy food things).
What is Lovebombing?
It is a technique that involves giving your child an intense burst of positive attention, affection, and love in a focused period. The idea is to make your child feel incredibly loved and secure, which can help address emotional needs that might be disrupting their sleep.
Lovebombing sessions are typically planned and can include activities your child loves, like reading, playing games, or simply cuddling.
The key thing is to focus solely on your child, putting away distractions like phones or chores, and being fully present.
How it improves sleep:
Emotional Security: Lovebombing helps children feel safe and secure. When children feel emotionally supported, they are less likely to wake up during the night due to anxiety or fear. (Especially toddlers)
Strengthened Parent-Bubs Bond: The quality time spent during lovebombing strengthens the bond between you and your klein een (little one in Afrikaans), which can lead to better cooperation and less resistance at bedtime.
Stress Reduction: Just like adults, children can feel stressed. Lovebombing acts as a stress reliever, helping them to relax and sleep better.
Consistent Routine: Adding a lil lovebombing into your routine can create a predictable and calming pre-sleep space for your kid, signalling to their body that it's time to wind down.
If you’ve recently welcomed a sibling and you’ve noticed your toddler is experiencing a sleep regression, love bombing can help your toddler transition from being the only child, to having to share mummy and daddy’s attention.
Implementing Some Lovebombing:
Here are some simple steps to integrate lovebombing into your child’s routine:
1. Carve Aside Time: Dedicate specific times during the day for lovebombing sessions. Even 10-15 minutes can make a significant difference.
2. Be Present: During these sessions, focus entirely on your child. Put your phone away and turn off distractions. Engage in activities they have chosen and enjoy.
3. Positive Reinforcement: Use these moments to reinforce positive behaviour and provide lots of verbal and physical affection. A bit of role play always helps here too.
4. Consistency: Make lovebombing a regular part of your day, especially before bedtime. This consistency helps reinforce the emotional security and routine.
Tips for Success..
Personalise Activities: Choose activities that your child loves to make the sessions enjoyable and effective.
Stay Patient
It might take some time for your child to adjust to this new routine, so be patient and persistent. If they start the lovebomb session by being grumpy, don’t worry. This is normal and it may take them some time until they fully open up and enjoy it.
Communicate
Talk to your child about their feelings and reassure them of your love and support.
