Finding Perspective in Education

A Chat with Mum

Hey Community,

I hope this message finds you well and rested. Last night, I had the pleasure of having a meaningful FaceTime chat with my mum, and it got me thinking about the pressures we put on ourselves when it comes to our children's education.

My mum, a retired high school teacher, shared some fascinating insights about her own educational journey. Born in England, her family moved to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) when she was young, and later to Zambia. During their time there, formal education wasn't readily available, so my mum and her siblings were homeschooled with the help of a private tutor and correspondence courses.

It wasn't until she was 10 years old, upon moving to South Africa, that my mum entered formal schooling. Despite the unconventional start, she excelled from the get-go. In her first year, she even won the spelling bee prize for not making a single spelling mistake all year!

Reflecting on her experience, my mum highlighted the importance of a nurturing and supportive environment over the prestige of a school. She stressed that children thrive when they feel loved, supported, and encouraged, regardless of the educational setting.

This conversation brought me comfort and reminded me not to get too caught up in the rat race of securing a spot in the "best" school.

Instead, my focus shifted to creating a loving and supportive home environment where my children can flourish.

So, if you're feeling the weight of educational expectations, take a deep breath and remember that everything will be okay.

Hold your babies close, nurture their curiosity, and trust that they will find their path.

Sending you all love and light,
