Finding Harmony In Parenting

Our Balancing Act

Hey guys,

I hope you're all doing well today?

Yesterday, I had a bit of a wake-up call during a chat with my psychologist. I see a professional weekly to help me with the mental load of mothering 3 lovely, but v demanding kids. Anyway, yesterday we dove into the topic of risk appetite in parenting, and it hit close to home.

You see, my husband and I have been navigating some tension lately around this very issue and it all came to a head when I went to the chiropractor to sort out my back yesterday, leaving our three kids in his care.

Little did I know, an innocent trip to the pool would turn into a bit of a parenting showdown. I returned home to find out that he had been letting our one-year-old slide into the deep end of the pool—despite the fact that he can't swim yet.

Needless to say, we had quite the argument.

It's moments like these that make us realise just how differently we approach parenting. While my husband's adventurous spirit often leads him to encourage our kids to embrace new challenges, I tend to err on the side of caution, especially when it comes to their safety. He calls me “The health and safety officer.”

But we need to learn and grow together.

Here are some strategies we are planning to use to find common ground:

Open Communication

We want to make it a priority to openly discuss our parenting philosophies and concerns. By listening to each other without judgment, we hope to find ways to compromise and meet in the middle.

Compromise and Flexibility

Recognising that neither of us have all the answers, we want to learn to be flexible in our approach to parenting. We're willing to try new strategies that are a mix of both our perspectives.

Focus on Safety

While I may lean towards caution, my husband reminds me of the importance of developing independence and resilience in our children. Together, we want to prioritise safety while also encouraging our kids to explore their boundaries in a supportive environment.

Mutual Respect

Above all, we want to approach parenting with mutual respect for each other's viewpoints. He tells me all the time that I need to trust that both of us have our children's best interests at heart, even if we approach things differently.

I'm constantly reminded that parenting is not about perfection (there’s no such thing as a perfect parent) but it is about doing our best with love and compassion.

We will try to be better at embracing our differences and working together create a harmonious environment where our children can thrive.

Wishing you a happy day, filled with love, laughter, and moments of growth.

With love. And hold your babies close.
