Discovering Bedtime Rituals
A Night of Connection and Insight
Greetings on this sunny Sunday!
Last night, our home in Cyprus was filled with laughter and the smell of sun cream and sizzling meat as we hosted a BBQ with our friends. We love hosting!
Picture this: juicy steaks, local sausages, and the infamous farmer's market haloumi, complemented by crisp, fresh veggies. And pitta bread of course. Amidst all the chaos, an intriguing conversation was had about bedtime rituals that left me inspired and reflective.
Our friends, who share two children similar in age to ours, shared their bedtime tradition that resonated deeply. Each night, as part of their winding-down routine, they engage in a simple yet profound little ritual with their four year old daughter.
Together, mummy counts to 100 while gently massaging their 4 year old’s feet before bed every night.
Their little bedtime counts and foot rubs, not only gives their daughter a sense of calm and relaxation before sleeps but it also serves as a gorgeous bonding experience between mummy and daughter.
What struck me most was the intentionality behind this ritual. It was crafted with pure love and tailored to their daughter's own needs.
It reaffirmed the notion that parents are inherently resourceful, intuitively understanding what works best for their children. It is always lovely to witness parents commitment to nurturing their children. Also love that they resisted societal pressures (that their daughter must “self soothe” and go to bed on her own.) And that they are embracing their own parenting journey.
Reflecting on this, I'm reminded of my role as a sleep coach. While I may not be a therapist. I believe in celebrating families' strengths, normalizing their stressors, and applauding their creative problem-solving skills.
As we usher in a new week, I encourage you to cherish the bedtime rituals that bring joy and connection to your family.
Whether it's storytelling, cuddle time, or singing lullabies, these rituals hold immense value in nurturing the parent-child bond and creating a sense of security.
Wishing you all a happy Sunday filled with warmth and togetherness.
Remember to hold your little ones close and treasure the magic of bedtime rituals.
With love and light,
Tammy Peak.
