Breastfeeding: Bonding, Sleep, and the Counting Hours..
the highs, the lows, and everything in between!
Ah, breastfeeding. I have found it to be a journey filled with love (bonding), tears (mastitis and cracked nipples), cuddles, and, of course, sleepless nights.
Did you know that breastfeeding plays a role in promoting healthy sleep patterns for BOTH baby and you?!
Let's break it down.
From the moment your baby arrives, breastfeeding is a superpower.
It's not just about providing nutrition; it's about creating a bond too.
Those late-night feeds may be exhausting, but also you will look back on them as gorgeous moments of connection (not all of them) but some.
The best bit? Breastmilk contains all sorts of good stuff, including melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate sleep. So, by feeding on demand, you're not just feeding your baby; you're also helping them establish a natural sleep rhythm.
It's like a built-in sleep aid, straight from Mummy!!
But it's not just about the milk. The act of breastfeeding itself is calming and soothing for both of you. It releases oxytocin, the "love hormone," which helps you both relax and unwind.
And don’t stop when your baby turns one please (unless you have to) because as your baby grows, breastfeeding continues to be a source of comfort and security, even as sleep patterns change.
Whether it's a quick feeding session before bedtime or a midnight snack to soothe, breastfeeding remains a cherished part of our bedtime and naptime routines.
Now, let's talk numbers. I recently did some maths (don't worry, no calculators required!) and estimated the total hours I have spent breastfeeding..
Approximately 5,256 hours! Here is how I worked it out;
Let's take the average:
Feeding every 2.5 hours = 24/2.5 = 9.6 feedings per day
If each feeding session lasts around 30 minutes:
9.6 feedings * 30 minutes = 288 minutes per day
Converting this to hours:
288 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 4.8 hours per day
Assuming this pattern continues for the first year of each child's life:
4.8 hours per day * 365 days = 1,752 hours per year per child
For three children:
1,752 hours/year * 3 children = 5,256 hours
So, here's to the amazing world of breastfeeding—the bonding, the everything.
And cheers to you super mummy’s, hold your babies close while you feed please x
