Balancing Act

Routine and Flexibility in Baby Sleep

Yiasoo everyone 👋

It's often said that too much of anything can be overwhelming, whether it's the predictability of routine or the uncertainty of spontaneity.

As a mum of three, a social worker, and a holistic sleep coach, widely known as the Sleep Goddess, I find this very true when it comes to managing baby sleep patterns.

Routine with a Touch of Flexibility

Maintaining a balanced approach helps keep life both fresh and meaningful. In our household, I aim for a mix of routine and flexibility to effectively manage our days. For example, I strive for at least one cot nap per day to establish a sense of structure. However, the other nap can happen in the car or in the pram—this blend allows us to keep our days varied yet predictable. As my little one transitions to one nap a day, the goal will remain to have that nap in the cot. But on days when it doesn't happen, it’s no train smash. Life, as we all know, is wonderfully unpredictable.

Learning from Mediterranean Practices

In many Mediterranean cultures, parents adopt a remarkably flexible schedule with baby sleep. They embrace practices like babywearing and co-sleeping, and often have the help of grandparents, which adds a beautiful layer of familial interaction and support. Have you watched my viral Instagram video of my mum rocking baby J to sleep? Love it. Anyway, I am learning from the Mediterranean cultures that flexibility helps maintain a relaxed approach to parenting.

The Reality of Growing Families

With one child, it might be easier to stick to a strict sleep schedule, but as families grow, this becomes increasingly challenging. Subsequent children might need to adapt to more fluid schedules because you’re not always able to be home-bound for naps. Acknowledging this early on can help set more realistic expectations for both parents and children. Setting expectations is so important, I find. And I can help you with this. This guide will offer practical tips and flexible strategies to accommodate both the need for routine and the inevitable spontaneity of daily life.

Holding Your Babies Close ♥️

At the core of my philosophy as the Sleep Goddess is the belief in holding your babies close, creating an environment of love and security that nurtures their development. This philosophy permeates every piece of advice and guidance I share, aiming to enhance the bond between you and your child.

Let's Keep the Conversation Going

I’d love to hear from you about how you balance routine and spontaneity in your family's life. Your experiences and strategies are invaluable and can inspire others in our community?
