Vitamins and Minerals That WILL Optimise Your Child’s Sleep 💤
Hey peeps 🐥
I'm The Sleep Goddess, mum of three under 6, Social Worker, and holistic baby sleep coach.
Today I want to share the best vitamins and minerals to support your baby's sleep and overall health, along with some practical tips and insights from my own experiences <3
The Best Vitamin Supplements for Baby Sleep (According to Science)
As a mum, I know how important, (and how difficult) it is to ensure our littles get the nutrients they need for healthy growth and sleep. Especially the fussy toddlers!
But I thought I would give you the lowdown anyway. These vitamins and minerals are backed by science. They really can support your baby’s sleep:
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is needed for your baby's bone development and immune system. Research shows that adequate Vitamin D levels can also help regulate sleep patterns. Ensure your baby gets enough sunlight or consider a Vitamin D supplement, especially if you're in a region with limited sun exposure and have dark skin.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is vital for your baby's growth, vision, and immune function. It also plays a role in maintaining healthy skin and mucous membranes. A well-nourished baby with sufficient Vitamin A is likely to experience better overall health and more consistent sleep.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is boosts your baby's immune system and helps in the absorption of iron. It can also reduce the duration and severity of colds, leading to fewer disruptions in sleep. Fresh fruits like oranges and strawberries are excellent sources.
Side note: Always consult your paediatrician before starting any new supplement to ensure it's appropriate for your baby's individual needs. It is recommended that all ages, particularly in the winter months and if you live in cold climates, use a daily vit D supplement.
The Importance of Iron for Baby Sleep
Iron is a much needed nutrient for your baby's development, particularly for their brain and red blood cells. Low iron levels can lead to restless leg syndrome, fatigue, and poor sleep.
Sources of Iron
Breast milk and formula are generally fortified with iron. Breastmilk’s iron reserves start running low from 6 months old.
It is important that when your baby starts solids (around 6 months), that you include iron-rich foods like meats, fortified cereals, and lentils.
If you suspect your baby might have low iron levels, consult your paediatrician for appropriate testing and supplementation. When Jett was 6 months old, he had blood testing for suspected pneumonia. The tests revealed he was iron deficient. Our paediatrician advised us to up his intake, so we did. We did things like; include spinach in his pancakes. Scrambled eggs for lunch. Gave him the “red meat” of a roast chicken to much on.
Calcium and the Role it plays in Baby Sleep
Calcium helps with baby's bone development regulate muscle contractions and nerve functions. A good calcium intake can promote better sleep patterns by ensuring your baby’s body is functioning optimally.
Sources of Calcium
Breast milk or formula provides enough calcium for infants.
As your baby grows, from 6 months it is good to introduce dairy products like yoghurt and cheese, and non-dairy sources like leafy greens and fortified plant milks.
Calcium supplements should only be given if recommended by your paediatrician.
Benefits of a Well-Balanced Diet for Baby Sleep:
Healthy Snacks
As your baby grows, offer healthy snacks like steamed vegetables and plain Greek yoghurt to avoid disrupting their sleep.
Balanced Meals
From around 6 months, introduce meals with a balance of protein, vegetables, and carbs.
